It’s no doubt that river cruising is an easy and popular way to see multiple destinations, especially in Europe where more than 100 river cruises sail the continent’s rivers. While these cruises have traditionally targeted an older demographic, many river cruise lines are shifting this notion and opening their cabins to a younger – much younger – crowd, inviting children and young adults on board. Read on to learn about Family River Cruises!
These family-specific sailings – usually scheduled to overlap school breaks – are designed to ensure all ages will enjoy themselves onboard and onshore, even without the adrenaline-pumping activities known to larger ocean cruises. Cruise Planners Travel Advisors can offer expert advice to help you choose the river cruise that is best for your family. Here are our three favorites:
Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection
Heidi Sarna, travel writer for QuirkyCruise.com traveled with her young family on one of Uniworld’s Generation Collection family sailings. With nearly 40 children and teens on board, her sons felt right at home with their new friends among the River Empress’ posh décor. Heidi and her family enjoyed the variety of excursion options, including kids-only tours supervised by Uniworld’s dedicated Family Hosts and guided bike tours along the Rhine River. Tauck River Cruises
Laura Blanco, Director of Sales for Cruise Planners, sailed on a Tauck Bridges itinerary with her husband and two children. The ship was filled with all types of families including some multi-generational and “skip-gen” groups. The onboard and onshore programming was fun and educational for all ages, so everyone enjoyed the history and culture of France while cruising the Seine River. So, what did Laura’s kids like least about the trip? Having to leave the ship to come home!
AmaWaterways
AmaWaterways has made it easier for families traveling with young children on river cruises with three-person and connecting staterooms.
