Back in the 90’s, my family sailed on the NCL SS Norway, an ocean liner first christened as the SS France in 1960. It was a wonderful glimpse into ocean cruising of another time. After nearly 55 years since the maiden voyage of the Norway, the NCL Getaway began her career sailing the Caribbean. We have now had the opportunity to sail on two of NCL’s flagship vessels from very different eras of cruising. In January of 2015, my family embarked on a Western Caribbean sailing in the Getaway. My wife Caitlin, Bryce (1), Ryland (5) and I traveled from our home in Denver to Miami ready for our next adventure.

Getting onboard

Embarkation was smooth and quick due to the fact that we booked a Haven suite. Furthermore, we were able to get to our stateroom as soon as we boarded. On this trip, we booked a 2 bedroom Family Villa with Balcony in the Haven. This stateroom was nothing short of incredible! The master bedroom was a private retreat, complete with a bathroom with an ocean view. Some of the master bathroom highlights included a double vanity, soaking tub and a glass enclosed shower. The kids had their own room with a flat-screen TV and private bathroom. In addition, there was a very spacious sitting area that led to a private balcony that completed this sanctuary at sea.

The Haven experience was wonderful on this ship. We had the opportunity to relax at a private pool, dine at the Haven restaurant and enjoy the exemplary service of the crew assigned to our stateroom. Most of all, we enjoyed having a quiet area of the ship to relax in between our port stops and exploring the rest of this brand new ship. NCL did a great job designing public areas of the ship in an effort to minimize bottlenecks, as a result never once did feel that the ship was crowded. The boys enjoyed the kids pool, as well as exploring other public areas of the ship. While we have heard great things about the kids club programs, the boys chose not to attend on this trip.

What about the food?

As with most cruisers, the food experience is at the top of the list for must-haves. The Getaway did not disappoint! We had dinner in the main dining rooms (Savor & Taste) every evening and while our buys are very adventurous eaters my eldest was on a Gluten-free diet at the time. We mentioned this request on the first day of the trip and the staff did a great job with providing him diet appropriate (and tasty) meal options. Our butler in the Haven would even bring gluten-free snacks every day after nap time! We enjoyed the Garden Cafe buffet for breakfast and lunch. We did not take advantage of any of the fee dining options on this sailing.

All in all, we had a great sailing on the NCL Getaway and look forward to another sailing on a Norwegian Cruise. Please enjoy a few photos from our trip!
